What to see at Castel San Pietro

Sunset is undoubtedly the most magical moment to visit Castel San Pietro.

Arrive about an hour before sunset to enjoy the golden light illuminating the city's monuments and stay until the night lights come on, creating an unforgettable romantic atmosphere.

In summer, many Veronese bring an aperitif and sit on the steps or panoramic benches to admire the spectacle.During the day, early morning is another excellent moment, when the light is clear, there are few tourists, and the temperature is still cool.

Discover Castel San Pietro

Castel San Pietro stands on the hill that dominates Verona from the left bank of the Adige, offering the most spectacular panoramic view over the entire city. Located 80 metres above the river level, this castle-fortress represents one of the most photographed and beloved scenic spots for both tourists and Veronese.

The strategic position of the hill has been exploited since Roman times, when a temple stood here. In the medieval period a Scaliger castle was erected, later replaced by the current Austrian barracks built between 1852 and 1858 during the Habsburg domination.

Today the complex houses a small military museum and is mainly appreciated for its panoramic belvedere, reachable on foot via a striking staircase or comfortably by funicular.

History of the fortress on the hill

From Roman origins to medieval castle

The hill of San Pietro has always had a strategic role in the history of Verona thanks to its dominant position over the city and the Adige river. In Roman times a temple dedicated to Jupiter stood here, testifying to the sacred and military importance of the site.

During the medieval period, the Della Scala family had a fortified castle built that controlled access to the city from the north. The Scaliger castle was part of the defensive system that also included the city walls and other fortifications on the surrounding hills.

The elevated position made it possible to spot incoming enemies and to communicate via signals with the other towers and fortifications in the area. Over the centuries, the castle underwent various transformations and extensions, adapting to changing military technologies and defensive needs.

The nineteenth-century Austrian barracks.

The current building we see today was built by the Austrians between 1852 and 1858, during the period when Verona was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was one of the fortresses of the famous military Quadrilateral together with Peschiera, Mantua and Legnago.

The Austrians demolished almost completely the previous medieval structures to build a modern military barracks in neoclassical style, designed according to the most advanced criteria of military architecture of the time. The square-plan building with internal courtyard could house several hundred soldiers and had warehouses, powder magazines and all the services necessary for a garrison. The mighty perimeter walls and bastions were built to withstand modern artillery, while the loopholes allowed the defence of the hill from any attacks.

The site today: museum and belvedere

After the Unification of Italy, the castle maintained its military function until the 20th century. Today it is partially open to the public and houses a small military museum that tells the story of Verona's fortifications and preserves weapons, uniforms and historical documents from the Austrian period and the World Wars.

But the real attraction of Castel San Pietro is undoubtedly its panoramic belvedere. From the terrace in front of the castle you can enjoy a 360-degree view that ranges from the Arena and the medieval historic centre, to the Adige river winding through the hills, all the way to the mountains of Lessinia on the horizon.

At sunset, when the golden lights illuminate the red rooftops of the city and the bell towers, the spectacle is particularly evocative and romantic.

The complex is also a place much loved by the Veronese, who come here to stroll, jog or simply enjoy the view of the city, especially on summer evenings when the heat on the plain becomes intense and the breeze on the hill offers refreshment.
