History and dedication

Cesare Lombroso and the birth of modern scientific criminology

Cesare Lombroso was born in Verona in 1835 to a Jewish family and studied medicine in Pavia, Vienna and Paris. Returning to Italy, he became a military doctor and then a psychiatrist, dedicating himself to the scientific study of criminals through anthropometric measurements, post-mortem examinations and statistical analysis. His most famous work, "Criminal Man" (1876), proposed the theory of the "born criminal" according to which some people are born with physical and mental characteristics that predispose them to crime.

Although many of his theories were subsequently superseded and criticised for biological determinism, Lombroso had the historical merit of bringing the scientific method to the study of crime, founding criminology as an academic discipline. He was also a pioneer of forensic psychiatry and introduced concepts such as psychiatric attenuating circumstances in criminal trials. The City of Verona decided to name this modern park after the famous fellow citizen to honour his contribution to science, while recognising the limits of his theories.

Modern park and recreational facilities for resident families

The Lombroso Park was created in the 2000s as part of the urban development of the Borgo Trento neighbourhood, a residential area of Verona characterised by modern apartment buildings, single-family homes and large green spaces. The park was designed according to modern criteria of usability and safety: certified playgrounds with anti-trauma flooring, low-energy LED lighting, paths accessible to disabled people and video surveillance systems. The fitness areas are equipped with gym equipment for outdoor training: benches, bars, wall bars and cardio machines that allow sports enthusiasts to train for free in the open air.

The multipurpose courts with concrete flooring host spontaneous matches of basketball and five-a-side football, especially in the afternoon when children come out of school. The park is particularly busy at weekends with families with small children who appreciate the safety, cleanliness and modern facilities.

Cultural events and neighborhood life in residential Borgo Trento

The Lombroso Park is the green heart of the Borgo Trento neighbourhood and serves as a place of social aggregation for residents. During the summer the city and neighbourhood associations organise cultural events: classical music and jazz concerts, open-air film screenings on a giant screen, theatre shows for children and local craft markets. These events create moments of socialisation and strengthen the sense of community.

The park also hosts amateur sporting events: 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, running races, fitness days with professional instructors and free yoga and pilates lessons on the lawns. The Neighbourhood Festival held every June transforms the park into a festive village with food stalls, live music, games for children and stalls of local products. The Lombroso Park represents an example of modern urban planning attentive to the quality of life and to green spaces, making it a model for other Veronese neighbourhoods.
