Carnival in Sona: Sunday, March 1, 2026 in Roma Square

On Sunday 1 March 2026, the small municipality of Sona, just a few kilometres from Verona, turns into an open-air stage to celebrate Carnival. A day designed for the whole family, packed with events that follow on from one another from the morning into the afternoon, with Piazza Roma as the beating heart of the festival.

It all starts at 9:45 with a workshop for children, the perfect way to get into the spirit of the day before the festivities really get going. At 11:00 there is Holy Mass, a moment of contemplation that recalls the most authentic tradition of village Carnival, closely linked to the liturgical calendar.

From midday, the square comes alive with the community lunch: on the menu are gnocchi, tortellini, chips, hot dogs, drinks and coffee. A convivial, informal occasion, open to everyone, with the unmistakable feel of a real community and that genuine simplicity often hard to find in big cities.

The afternoon kicks off at 1:00 pm with face painting, and then at 2:00 pm the Carnival parade gets underway, opened by the Sona Town Band. Masks, colours and live music will accompany the procession along the village streets, returning to the square where everyone is welcomed back with more gnocchi, chips and pancakes — the sweet-and-savoury finale every self-respecting Carnival deserves.

For those visiting Verona during this period, making a stop in Sona means immersing yourself in an authentic folk festival, far from the tourist circuits, where Carnival is still celebrated as it once was: in the streets, in the square, all together. The town can be reached by car in about 20 minutes from the center of Verona.
