An afternoon of Japanese art and magic
There is a place in Verona where, for a few hours, the boundary between reality and imagination becomes as thin as a paintbrush. On Saturday 7 March 2026, the creative space Hygge Hive hosts an event that brings together painting, culture and animation cinema in a truly out-of-the-ordinary experience.
The format is simple but effective: you paint and learn at the same time. No artistic experience is required â the instructor guides each participant step by step in creating a scene from the world of Princess Mononoke, Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece. The twist? You work with fluorescent colours that glow in the dark, turning every canvas into a unique and striking object.
During the two hours of the event you can choose between two subjects: a forest inhabited by the Kodama, the small round-headed tree spirits that appear in the film, or a scene with Shishigami, the powerful deer-shaped deity. In both cases, the result will be a personal, luminous work full of detail.
But the magic does not end on the canvas. While you paint, Honoka â Japanese language and culture teacher â leads attendees on a journey of discovery: the hidden meaning of the images, the relationship between nature and spirituality in Japanese tradition, the metaphors that make Princess Mononoke a film still so relevant and beloved decades after its release.
It is a two-level experience: the hands-on, concrete, creative one; and the cultural, narrative, reflective one. Anyone who loves Japan, animation or simply looks for something different will find in this afternoon an original way to spend time in the city.
The participation fee is âŦ25, including materials, artistic guidance and cultural insight. Booking is available on paintandghibli.eventbrite.it. For information you can write to hello@speakandspritz.it or call +39 345 840 0476.
