An evening of great theatre around Verona

If you love theatre and are in Verona at the end of February, it is worth heading out to San Martino Buon Albergo, just a few kilometres from the city, for a truly special evening. On Saturday 28 February 2026, at 9:00 pm, the Teatro Peroni in Piazza del Popolo hosts one of the most important shows on the contemporary Italian theatre scene.

The appointment is part of the Evoluzioni theatre season, promoted by the Municipality of San Martino Buon Albergo together with Ippogrifo Produzioni, a programme that in this edition has already stood out for the quality of its choices and for several sold-out evenings. The most awaited title closes the season: Kohlhaas by Marco Baliani.

Born in the 1990s, Kohlhaas is considered a milestone of Italian storytelling theatre. The show, written by Marco Baliani and Remo Rostagno and performed by Baliani himself, has reached over one thousand performances all over Italy, winning over audiences and critics with an apparently simple but extraordinarily powerful formula: a single actor, a chair, and a story that you don't forget.

The story takes its cue from Heinrich von Kleist's novella: we are in 16th-century Germany, and Michael Kohlhaas is a horse merchant who is badly wronged and comes up against a corrupt and inaccessible justice system. What begins as a legitimate demand for justice gradually turns into something darker and more disruptive, raising questions that remain unanswered long after the play ends: where does law end and revenge begin? How far can a man who has lost everything go?

Baliani brings these themes to the stage with an intense stage presence and masterful use of the word, creating a direct, almost confidential relationship with the audience. There is no elaborate set, no special effects: there is only the force of the narrative, and that is enough.

Marco Baliani is one of the great names of Italian theatre: actor, author and director with decades of career behind him, he has helped redefine the way theatre is made and understood in our country. Witnessing Kohlhaas live is an experience worth the trip.

Seats are limited and the season has already sold out several evenings: if you are interested, it is advisable to inquire early about ticket availability.
