There is a way to rediscover the great myths of classical literature without getting bored โ in fact, while laughing out loud. Paolo Cevoli, one of Italy's most beloved comedians, proves it with his new monologue "Sons of Troy", sold out for months across Italy.
The show takes its cue from Virgil's Aeneid, but reinterprets it with that irresistible ability to mix high and low, ancient and contemporary that has always characterised Cevoli's talent. Aeneas becomes a familiar, recognisable figure, almost a next-door neighbour: he flees from burning Troy with the deities in his pocket, his father on his shoulders and his son by the hand, and at the end of his long wanderings he lands at the mouth of the Tiber where โ between lit fires and hot focaccia โ the destiny of Rome is fulfilled with a feast based on porchetta sandwiches.
From this point the tale takes flight. Cevoli juxtaposes eras and characters far apart from each other, creating comic short-circuits of great effectiveness: Christopher Columbus becomes a navigator who takes the wrong route and for this changes the history of the world; Snow White's stepmother spends her days taking selfies; Ulysses and Elon Musk, Achilles and Donald Trump end up on the same narrative stage. All seasoned with forays into pop music, complete with references to the Village People.
There is no shortage of more intimate reflections: the monologue also weaves in the story of Cevoli's father, who emigrated to Australia in the 1950s, bringing ancient myth closer to the concrete experience of those who left everything to start over somewhere else. It is this constant shift of perspective โ from the legendary to the everyday, from the epic to the personal โ that lies at the beating heart of the show.
