A castle, a ghost and a Texan family: the comedy is served
There is a show that promises guaranteed laughter this Sunday 12 April 2026 at the Teatro Santa Teresa in Verona. At 5:30 pm, Il fantasma del Burgerville takes the stage, a brilliant comedy that mixes English humour, clownish gags and a hint of magic, in a plot inspired by Oscar Wilde's famous The Canterville Ghost.
The story starts from an irresistible premise: a ghost has been haunting his castle for almost four hundred years, dutifully carrying out his role as a disturbing presence. Then, one day, a noisy American family from Texas arrives with a rather original idea — to open a fast food joint inside an English manor, in order to bring to Europe the great culinary novelty of the 1950s: the cheeseburger.
From that moment on, the poor ectoplasm finds himself in an unprecedented situation: he no longer scares anyone — on the contrary, he has become an integral part of the castle's purchase package. Endless pranks, new rules of cohabitation, incompatible habits — everything contributes to a succession of hilarious situations that keep the audience smiling throughout.
The show reworks Wilde's tale with great freedom, keeping the spirit of the original intact — that ability to overturn roles and make the victim the true protagonist — but bringing it into a modern and irreverent key. The bizarre characters, the cultural contrasts between England and America and the physical gags weave together in a way that works for both the adult and the younger audience.
And the ending? Without giving too much away, there is an ancient prophecy to fulfil, and it will be a young American girl who finds the way to resolve the story. A twist that Wilde would probably have appreciated.
