Peschiera del Garda is the south-eastern gateway to Lake Garda and the only Italian town built entirely inside a 16th-century Venetian pentagonal fortress, listed since 2017 as a UNESCO World Heritage site within the "Venetian Defence Works". The old town, enclosed by bastions and crossed by three canals of the Mincio river, is a maze of alleys, bridges and fortified squares that feels like a miniature Venice on the lake.

Experiences on Lake Garda

The town is 25 km from Verona (around 25 minutes by car, Peschiera exit on the A4 Milan–Venice motorway) and only 5 minutes from Gardaland, Movieland and Caneva Aquapark, which is why it's one of the favourite bases for families wishing to explore the whole lake. It's also a terminus for regional trains and Frecciarossa high-speed trains on the Milan–Venice line, as well as the main port of Lake Garda Navigation.

Where to eat in Peschiera del Garda

Peschiera cuisine combines lake dishes and Mantuan-Veronese tradition. Must try: Valeggio tortellini served with melted butter and sage (Valeggio is 10 minutes away); pike in salsa with yellow polenta; bigoli with sardella; tench risotto and mixed fry of lavarello (whitefish) and perch. For desserts, the classic sbrisolona. Along the lakefront and the canals you'll find gourmet restaurants with a view, family-run trattorias and pizzerias.

Recommended wines are Custoza DOC (fresh white from the hills south of the lake), Bardolino DOC and Lugana DOC (from the opposite shore at Sirmione but served everywhere).

Beaches and lakefront

Peschiera has several free and equipped beaches inside and outside the walls. Spiaggia Braccobaldo, to the south, is wide and well-serviced; Lido Campanello is the most popular in the centre, with green lawn, sand and shallow waters suitable for children. The Salvo D'Acquisto lakefront connects the centre and the Bergamini area with about 2 km of pedestrian promenade, full of gelaterias and small swimming coves.

Peschiera has held the Blue Flag in recent years. The water here is particularly clear thanks to the renewing effect of the Mincio; in July and August it reaches 24–25 °C, while May–June and September are ideal for those seeking less crowds and pleasant temperatures (20–22 °C).

Typical events

Highlights include: the Historic Flags Palio in summer, with regattas on the Mincio and Renaissance costume parades; the Garda Jazz Festival in July at historic sites of the fortress; the San Martino Festival in November with country fair. February is the Peschiera Carnival, one of the oldest in the Veneto, with a parade of allegorical floats on the canals. In December, Christmas markets among the fortified gates and an ice-skating rink.
